Your child should be familiar with all the Key Stage 2 objectives and have a thorough understanding of the basics and be able to solve problems using this knowledge.For the 11 plus maths it is very important that your child has a thorough understanding of the basics of maths. It is very easy to have missed an important lesson at school for whatever reason or simply just never understood it well enough to continue.You need to check that they understand all the topics covered in Key Stage 2.

To work through them all in the following order:

Times Tables – extremely important – must know these

Place Value – know the value of every digit

4 basic operations – Add, Subtract, Multiply and Divide – Inverse

Factors – Numbers that divide exactly into other numbers

Negative numbers – Square and Cube numbers – Square root

Prime numbers – Consecutive numbers – Roman numerals

Sequences and number patterns – Triangular numbers

Equations and Algebra (number sentences) – Function machines

Fractions – Decimals – Percentages – Ratio and Proportion

Handling data – Frequency Tables, Pictograms, Bar Charts, Pie Charts and Line Graphs

Carroll Diagrams, Venn Diagrams – Mean, Median, Mode and Range – Probability/Chance

2D shapes – Terminology, Circles, Triangles, Quadrilaterals, and Polygons

Angles, Bearings and Compasss Directions.

3D shapes – cubes, spheres, prisms, pyramids, cones etc.

Nets – Vertices – Faces – Edges – Area – Perimeter – Volume – Capacity

Transformation – Coordinates – Reflection – Translation – Rotation

Congruent and Similar – Line Symmetry – Rotational Symmetry

Measurement Length – Mass / Weight – Capacity/Volume

Time – Timetables – Reading scales

These topics are broadly divided into 4 sections:

Number – Handling Data – Shape and Space – Measurement

Be aware that your child may not yet have covered some of the topics at the level required for the 11 Plus maths tuition. Talk to your child’s teacher to find out what they have covered. They should have a planned scheme of work that they may be willing to share with you so that you can co-ordinate your efforts.
